Date : London,1 November Title : A1GP of Nations heads to shores of Sydney, Australia
A1 Grand Prix reached a landmark in Estoril. It was three races old, had completed the first quarter of its inaugural season and is heading to Australia for its 1st fly-away event. Asia and Dubai will follow soon after making up the next three rounds in the 12 race Series that will finish in China next April.
It was less than two years ago that Sheikh Maktoum launched his dream on the world of motorsport. He had come up with a unique concept where the worlds of motorsport and business met and the participants were there for the pride of their nations. This was the 1st ever World Cup of Motorsport.
The concept burst into reality at Brands Hatch on 25 September this year. In the first race 25 teams tip toed round the famous Kent circuit finding their way and coming to terms with their machinery. The 72,000-strong crowd created an electric atmosphere as people from every country and every walk waved flags showing their support and cheering for victory in the 1st nation versus nation motorsport event.
This first experience for race fans was quickly followed by races in the next four weeks in Germany and Portugal. The German stop on the world tour was at the EuroSpeedway near to Dresden while the Portuguese one was at the Estoril track on the Atlantic coast a 30 minute drive from Lisbon.
In Germany it was an explosion of speed, noise and entertainment. A1 Grand Prix had arrived. Exceptional drivers began to show their mettle making names for themselves on an international stage, many for the first time. Names previously only known to the motorsport fraternity are becoming household names in the country they represent, carrying the pride of their nation to the delight of its people.
As the Series moved to Portugal the playing field became even closer as young up and coming drivers took on their adversaries in an action-packed hour of magnificent overtaking and exciting manoeuvres.
After the first six races the score in wins was four to France and two to Brazil. However, this was only part of the story. The nations who had never been known for their motorsport prowess were delivering on the track. Pakistan, Lebanon, the Czech Republic, China and Russia were taking on the nations with decades of motorsport heritage such as Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and the USA.
This Series takes its competitors to the four corners of the world and it will reach eighty per cent of the world's population via television. It is only just over a month since 72,000 excited fans packed into Brands Hatch, but already over 100 countries have TV deals and on a daily basis this number is being added to.
The Series knows no barriers. In Germany ancient adversaries India and Pakistan stood side by side to honour its earthquake victims. Australia and New Zealand have garages a few yards apart, while the slogan on the USA car - We The People - says it all about who these drivers are racing for.
25 identical cars are driven by drivers who are happy to remain anonymous while plying their trade. The commentators talk about Italy being overtaken by Portugal and not Enrico Toccacelo being overtaken by Alvaro Parente. It has young drivers on their way up - Parente is the newly crowned British Formula 3 champion - taking on national heroes of many year's standing - Jos Verstappen has a personal fan club of over 10,000 Dutch people many of whom are travelling to the races.
As the Series heads to Australia, the host nation needs only eight points to put itself level with historic rivals New Zealand, who currently lay one place ahead in the points table. "We hope the Australian people will come to support their national team and cheer them on in what will be a tough race for all involved. With such a small gap between A1 Team Australia and New Zealand, we hope an energetic Aussie crowd will push our team on to achieve a podium position at our home race", said A1 Team Australia's Seatholder, Alan Jones.
Sheikh Maktoum, a member of the Dubai ruling family, has backing from the business world with South African entrepreneur, Tony Teixeira, happy to put money garnered from the exploration of oil, gas and diamonds behind what he considers a sound business venture. This unlikely business partnership has worked and they are both now happy to watch their "baby" grow.
Date : Unknown,2 November Title : One Series, Three plane loads
A1 Grand Prix isn't a series that travels light, as proved that it has filled three Boeing 747s in transporting 50 cars and equipment for the 25 teams from Portugal to Australia.
"We're shipping 235,000kg of gear," explained A1GP freight manager Ian Barnwell. "By the time we've added the three Audi course cars that we're taking to Malaysia, that figure will be up to close on 250,000kg. Although a 747 can carry as much as 90,000kg, this is enough to fill three 747s, as there's bulk as well as weight.
"Each team is given a pod for its equipment, plus two odd-shaped boxes known as 'cheeses', a coffin-shaped box and another box for tarnsporting the panels that are hung to make the backdrop to their garage, with an allowance for three tons of equipment. The cars are transported separately, being loaded two to a car rack, weighing in at two tons apiece fully laden.
"In addition to this, we freight five ppallets of track signage, several of timing equipment and Zytek has some for its equipment, with A1GP having three pods for its organisational gear."
The enterprise of packing the cars and equipment for Australia had to be completed by 07:00 Tuesday, with many teams managing to complete their role by Monday evening. Then a fleet of 35 40ft trucks collected the pods and equipment boxes and ferried them to Lisbon airport by Tuesday evening where handling agent TPD had reserved the car park outside the freight depot for 12 hours. This, along with the fact that TPD had arranged for customs to inspect the equipment at the circuit over the weekend, meant that loading the freight onto the planes went smoothly under the watchful eye of a loadmaster and customs was cleared on Tuesday evening for a Wednesday morning departure.
As cargo planes carry heavier loads than passenger ones, two stops were required en route, with the loads arriving in Sydeny on Friday morning, in plenty of time to be delivered to the Eastern Creek circuit for the Monday morning, two days ahead of the arrival of the teams.
Date : Unknown,3 November Title : Australia welcomes A1GP
A1 Team Australia seatholder Alan Jones is confident that the forthcoming round of the A1 Grand Prix series in his home country at Eastern Creek on 4-6 November is going to be a spectacular success.
"We Aussies are pretty good at putting on sporting events, such as the Olympic Games," said the 1980 World Champion modestly, "so I reckon that this will be the best A1 Grand Prix round yet."
"I want the team to do well, and it will need to as, in all sporting fields, Australia expects. We Aussies aren't forgiving of failure."
The build-up towards A1 Grand Prix of Nations Eastern Creek has been going well, with city of Sydney fetooned with promotional flags hanging from the lamp posts, and Jones says that tickets are all but sold-out, which is just the sort of response he expected from the population of a city as cosmopolitan as Sydney.
"We've got 600,000 people living in Sydney for whom English isn't their first language," continued Jones, "so I reckon we can expect plenty of national flags to be waved from the grandstands. It will look like a World Cup event, which is precisely what A1 Grand Prix is all about."
The action at the circuit will kick off on the Monday when Sheikh Maktoum will be giving Australian fans their first experience of the sound and fury of an A1 Grand Prix car with a demonstration run in the morning.
