Title : A1 Team Japan is back in action

A1 Team Japan is back in action this weekend in the A1 Grand Prix of Nations at Eastern Creek, having missed the previous round at Estoril in Portugal.
Hayanari Shimoda, fresh from winning the American Le Mans Series sportscar race at Laguna Seca, is the new driver and he's delighted to be making a return to single-seaters after a year away since contesting the Formula Renault V6 Euroseries.
"Racing for your nation is a really exciting concept", said the 21-year-old. "I want to return to competing in single-seaters and I can't wait to race here at Eastern Creek this weekend. Luckily, I did a GP2 test last month so that will help me get my eye in again in single-seaters, something that's important as I won't have driven the A1GP car at all before going out to practice tomorrow."

Title : A1 Team Indonesia to miss Eastern Creek event

A1 Team Indonesia is to miss the 4th round of the A1 Grand Prix series at Eastern Creek this weekend as driver Ananda Mikola is honouring a contract to compete in the final round of the Asian Formula 3 Championship at Batangas Race Circuit in the Philippines. He leads by 26 points, with 40 points on offer.
"I'm sorry that I can't compete in Australia this weekend", said Mikola, "but I'm sure that everybody will understand my decision as I have a chance of taking this title for the first time. I'll be back in two weeks time for the 5th A1GP round at Sepang."
Russell Christopher, Commercial Director A1 Team Indonesia, said: "Ananda is running extremely well in A1GP and his Asian F3 experience is certainly giving him the experience he needs to compete with us. We understand how important it is yto him that he competes in the final rounds and A1 Team Indonesia wishes him the best of luck."
"Ideally, we would have a replacement driver for Ananda to cover circumstances such as this, but we are not quite at the point where there are other Indonesian drivers with the required levels of experience for A1GP."
"One of our goals is to nurture Indonesian driving talent, so we're working towards setting up a driver development programme."

Title : A1GP hits Bondai Beach

A1 Grand Prix drivers hit Sydney's best known landmarks in the lead-up to this weekend's A1 Grand Prix of Nations at Eastern Creek.
The bravest of the drivers, along with A1GP's Sheikh Maktoum and Australian Sports Minister Sandra Nori did the bridge walk over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, right over the top that is, before those who suffer from vertigo kicked into action for a spot of surfing on the world famous Bondi Beach. A dozen of the drivers received expert tuition from the very best, five-time Women's World Surfing Champion Layne Beachley and some excellent footage of their wipe-outs was caught from a camera that really took the term on-board camera literally.
A1 Team GBR driver Robbie Kerr got close to the local wildlife, meeting and greeting a koala bear by the name of Balloo at the Koala Park to the north of Sydney.

Title : Three new drivers enter Series

The A1 Teams Italy, Russia and USA have introduced new drivers for the 4th round of the series at Eastern Creek, Sydney.
Former Formula 1 turned sportscar racer Andrea Montermini shared the driving for A1 Team Italy on the 1st day of practice with regular driver Enrico Toccacelo and is hopeful that he will be given the nod to take part in qualifying on Saturday, although his lack of experience in the car will probably dictate against that.
Roman Rusinov is the latest face in the A1 Team Russia car, the 5th to have tried it this year. He arrives from racing a Maserati MC12 in the FIA GT Championship and is enjoying his first run in a single-seater since he contested the Euro 3000 series in 2003.
Bryan Herta is the 3rd of the new trio, taking over from Scott Speed for this round in Australia and the following one at Sepang, Malaysia. Team owner Rick Weidinger is excited with the change: "I've known of Bryan since my days as an owner in the Indy Racing League and I know that he has the ability and experience to help us become a very successful team."

Women in Motorsport
A1 Team Australia is being helped out in the pits this weekend at Eastern Creek by the inaugural winner of the Women in Motorsport scholarship: Kirsty Last. The 20-year-old mechanical engineering student, who also races in Formula Vee, is hoping that this opportunity may open doors for her to secure a future working in the sport, and will be given a second opportunity to display her skills in next month's A1GP event in Dubai.

Title : A1GP of Nations, Eastern Creek, Australia Official Practice session results

Less than 10 minutes after 24 A1 race cars roared out of the pit lane for the 1st official practice session, the Eastern Creek lap record had been smashed. On his fourth lap, A1 Team Brazil's Nelson Piquet Jr put in the fastest lap of the session at 1:19.266, also the fastest lap of the day and more than three seconds quicker than Tim Leahey's 1:22.513 recorded in 2000 in a then, 3.5 liters Formula Holden. Throughout the session, another 13 A1 Teams also put themselves above the previous record time.
Commenting on his performance, Piquet said: 'It was a good lap. The car seemed very good and I did a good lap with no traffic. We did a qualifying simulation and just went for it and it was good. Eastern Creek is quite a good circuit, and it's not that easy. It's quite abrasive on the tyres so we have to make sure we get a good set-up for the races so we can make the tyres last throughout the races. Some of the corners are a bit dangerous as there is not a lot of space and not much run-off so it's quite tough which is the kind I like."
Mid-way through the 1st official practice session, conditions turned to wet with all A1 Teams putting in slower lap times towards the end of the session. The weather cleared for the second session but none of the A1 Teams failed to beat the fastest laps recorded at the beginning of session 1. With A1 Team France resuming their position at the top of the timing sheet, Nicolas Lapierre recorded the fastest lap of the 2nd session with a time of 1:21.037.
Lapierre commented: "We had a good strategy and we had a very good day, the team did a good job. It was difficult this morning with the conditions but we are getting better and I think we should have a good day tomorrow. I enjoy this track the first corner is great. The track is bumpy and it is easy to make mistakes here so I think the race will be very interesting."
Pleased to see A1 Grand Prix head to an Aussie circuit, A1 Team Australia's Seat Holder, himself an F1 Champion said: "It's fantastic to be here on home ground. As one of the first people to be involved in A1GP and see it evolve and develop the way it has is extraordinary and to see it come to Australia and have it here at Eastern Creek and see it all come to fruition is fantastic for me."
Both A1 Team Australia drivers had their turn behind the wheel at their home circuit with Christian Jones going out in the 1st session and Will Power out in the 2nd. "This morning we had a new car and I couldn't really go too fast until we had bedded in the new gear box. It took four or five laps until I could really push. Then the red flag came out. It wasn't really a good session for me as I would have liked to have done more laps in the dry" said Christian Jones.
Optimistic about his team's performance, Will Davidson who took the car out for the later session said: "Early on in the session I was trying to match the pace, was tuning the car. Early on we weren't that happy with it and I was still finding my feet a little bit, but we are making steps forward with it and by the time I was comfortable with everything the tyres were well passed their best so I had to struggle a bit. We're definitely not as far off as the times suggest and now with a new set of tyres and we'll be there or there abouts."
